THE ALBUM ['CHOSEN ONE' DOWNLOADABLE FOR RADIO PLAY]
With a debut album to their name, this is a band poised for greater things. Retro rock 'n' roll meets a fresh, non-derivative sound, and the result is truly unique.
Guitarist Phil Borrett and vocalist Robert Papworth have an intertwined musical history and a solid understanding of each other's approach. "I'm not sure I could write songs without Phil, I'm even less sure that I'd want to", as Rob would put it. When Simon came on board on drums in 2018 the sound became more accomplished, more inventive. A grungy, blues-oriented noise was being refined into a solid repertoire that the band began to develop real faith in. Intricate, West Coast guitar melodies left audiences with thoughts of Neil Young, while heavier riffs invoked a rebirth of grunge, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden being frequently mentioned. "I grew up with The Who and a few other bands of that era," says Phil, "then the 'indie' bands of the 90's brought something different. John Squire had a great style, it's hard to narrow influences down but there are plenty!".
In truth the influences are there, but originality is prominent. When the Got Your Six Music label brought them over to France to record an album, they were ready. The combination of the band's tenacity and originality, and the label's musical background and understanding of the business was surely 'meant to be'. The result of the 10 days in the studio is a collection of skillful, thought-provoking, and enjoyable music.
The work-hungry band and equally driven label are genuinely excited for the year ahead, promoting the album and taking the live performances to new areas. Ambition and originality will naturally remain key for a most understated band.
